Unit 06 Assignment 01

Research Log Entry 01
  1. Discuss how the author, the publisher, the faculty member, the library, and the students can be accommodated.

It may be possible for the author, the publisher, the faculty member, the library, and the students can be accommodated if a portion of the copies are sold to the professor’s colleagues to use in their classes & the other portion is bought and/or digitized by the library so that students will be able to borrow and/or access the books when needed.

  2. How can a fair arrangement be achieved?

Because there is no guarantee that enough copies will be sold to the professor’s colleagues, having it available to students through the library is another way to maximize profit. The portion of copies sold to the professor’s colleagues as well as those bought by the library will enhance profit through means of direct sales. Since the library will need to pay copyright use fees in order to create digitized copies for the availability of students, the publisher, and in turn, the author, will also gain a profit from the digitalization of this material. Ultimately, the library, school faculty, and students will be able to both access and use the book & in turn, the author will receive payment and the publisher will make a reasonable profit.

  3. What are the challenges in creating a fair arrangement for everyone?

One of the challenges in creating a fair arrangement for everyone the uncontrollable variables, specifically, supply and demand. When creating an arrangement, there is no guarantee that the public will demand as many books as the publisher may have published. Although the needs of the library, students & faculty will have been met, neither the publisher nor the author will make a profit. Another challenge one may face is the fact that there may not always be a middle ground – some arrangements may be more beneficial to some than it will be to others. Here, the challenge is deciding which is more important & formulating an arrangement which, although it may be somewhat lopsided, is as beneficial to all as possible.

Research Log Entry 02

  1. How can a balance be achieved between protecting privacy and meeting the needs of national security?

As stated by the American Library Association, “The right to privacy is the right to open inquiry without having the subject of one's interest examined or scrutinized by others.” Therefore, although the library may keep records of closed-stack call slips, computer sign-up sheets, registration for equipment or facilities, circulation records, Web sites visited, reserve notices, and/or research notes, if this information is not released to the public, one’s privacy is still being protected.
This is referred to as confidentiality. Although the library may have access to such information, the information remains confidential & therefore, our privacy is protected. Confidentiality gives us each the right to read, research and/or take interest in any subject we like – it protects our privacy.

  2. How did you react to the list of challenged books? Do you think some books should be banned or should all books be freely available? Why?

I was quite shocked after reviewing the list of challenged books.
Several of the books listed are books which I have read throughout the years. I found each of them to be very insightful – introducing me to new and different perspectives. Although I did not always agree with the material, I would not go as far as to consider banning any of those books. Literature is a form of expression & I would like to believe that we should all be able to express ourselves freely. What some may consider inappropriate may actually be insightful and perceptive to others. It is all about personal perspective. I am not for censorship – I believe that all books should be freely available. However, I feel that parents should have the right to censor what types of books their children read. By this I mean, if a young child wishes to read a book which clearly contains ideas which are inappropriate for children (i.e. sex, drugs, extreme violence, heavy profanity, etc.) then his/her parent(s) should have every right not to allow the child to read such a book. Accordingly, I do not think that all books are appropriate for all age groups. Therefore, I feel that before making the decision to read a book, one should be mentally prepared for the book’s content. Perhaps it may be wise to create a rating scale (such as they do for films & movies) to determine what may be appropriate for certain age groups. That way, all books will be freely available; however, material which may be considered “controversial” will not be made readily available to young readers.

  3. How have your overall ideas about information ethics changed or not changed after completing this unit?

After completing this unit, I feel that I am much more aware about the ideas and concepts of academic integrity, plagiarism, copyright, privacy/confidentiality and censorship. Although I was already familiar with these ideas, I feel that revisiting the information has definitely enhanced my understanding and awareness.

Unit 04 Assignment 02

Research Log Entry

  1. What is the main subject of your question?

The main subject of my question is the pinhole camera/camera obscura.

  2. What subject guide or guides did you use to identify the relevant databases for your question?

I used “art” as my subject guide

Database 01

  1. Which database did you choose for your search?

    Academic Search Premiere

  2. What terms did you enter to conduct your search?

For this search I used the term “pinhole camera.” I also used specific search options. I used Boolean operators and I also refined my search to show only articles which had been written between 1990 and 2009.

  3. How many results did you retrieve?

    This returned 171 results.

  4. If there were more than about 100 results, how did you refine your search terms to narrow your results?

In order to narrow down my results, I then added that I only wanted results which had both the terms “pinhole camera” and “camera obscura” in them. I also chose to only return articles that were written between 2000 and 2009.

  5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?

Since there were only 7 results, I briefly skimmed each entry and chose the article which I felt would be more useful in answering both of the two questions I had created during our topic sizing exercise.

  6. Which article did you choose? Give the bibliographic information for that article.

I chose an article titled "The Pinhole Point of View"

  7. How did you determine these articles were meaningful?

I read the description of the article and it was directly related to my topic. Additionally, it was a more recent article (written in 2000). Furthermore, I know that the Smithsonian Institution is an educational & research institution. Assuming that the publisher (Smithsonian) is a publication of the Smithsonian Institution, I would say that this is a credible source. (Please correct me if I am wrong)

Database 02

  1. Which database did you choose for your search?

    Grove Dictionary of Art.

  2. What terms did you enter to conduct your search?

Rather than using the term “pinhole camera” to start off my search, I chose to use the term “camera obscura” instead.

  3. How many results did you retrieve?

    This returned 46 results.

  4. If there were more than about 100 results, how did you refine your search terms to narrow your results?

Although there were only 46 results, I noticed that several of the results were biographies. So, I chose to further narrow my search by only displaying results that were subject entries. This returned 23 results.

  5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?

Again, I briefly skimmed each entry and chose the article which I felt was most informative & relevant to my topic.

  6. Which article did you choose? Give the bibliographic information for that article.

I chose an article titled “Camera Obscura.”

  7. How did you determine these articles were meaningful?

In order to determine whether or not the article was meaningful, I read it. After reading this article, I found that it was quite informative. The author also provided a bibliography in which she accredited each of the sources from which she had obtained her information – this provided reassurance that the information presented was both relevant & reliable. Furthermore, Oxford University Press is the largest university press in the world. Ultimately, it is a very prestigious press. Knowing this, one may assume that the article (which was published by OUP) is from a credible source.

Unit 04 Assignment 01

Research Log Entry 01
  1. What three periodicals did you choose?

    • Group 1: Time – AP .T37
    • Group 2: American Bar Association Journal – KB 1 A5
    • Group 3: Journal of Chemical Ecology – QD1 .J926

  2. Name three articles, one from each of the three journals you chose.

    • Time – America’s Next Top Model By: Kate Betts (Page 42)
    • American Bar Association Journal – The Ninety-Fourth: A Congress in Transition By: Bruce R. Hopkins (Page 65)
    • Journal of Chemical Ecology – Semiochemicals via Epoxide Inversion By: J.E. Oliver,

  3. R.M. Waters, and D.J. Harrison (Page 287)What are the major differences among these articles?

The article from the Time Magazine featured colored pictures. The article was focused on a single subject (the style of President Obama’s wife, Michelle Obama). It was a short article that featured quotes taken during interviews, facts and information regarding Michelle Obama’s previously sported fashions as well as a description and analysis of her style sense.

The article from the American Bar Association Journal was much longer & features several different subject headings under which the corresponding text described different Congressional achievements and failures throughout the years.

The article from the Journal of Ecology featured three different sections – an Introduction, Methods & Materials, and Result & Discussion. Unlike the other two articles, this entry seemed more like a scientific journal – a record of the steps taken, followed by the results & an analysis/explanation of these results as they relate to the scientific experiment/procedure.

  4. What are the major differences among these periodicals?

Time & the ABA Journal are similar in many ways – they are each publications which include advertisements as well as articles. The articles found in the ABA Journal seem to have been about government & politics. Although Time did feature articles about governmental issues and/or politics (i.e. the inauguration), it did not seem to have been written in as serious of a tone. Instead, it seemed to be written in a more expansive tone. However, the Journal of Ecology was extremely different from both the Time & ABA Journal. Like I mentioned before, it seemed more like a scientific journal covering a wide range of topics all of which are related to ecology. These topics include: biogeochemistry, ecosystems ecology, microbial ecology, physiological plant ecology, climate change, molecular genetics, mycorrhizal ecology, and the interactions between plants and organisms such as animals or bacteria. Obviously, you would not expect to find any articles about legislature in this periodical.

Research Log Entry 02

Database 01 - Britannica Online
  1. Which database did you choose for your first search?

I chose to use the Britannica Online to conduct my search.

  2. What terms did you enter to conduct your search?

For this search, I used the search term “pinhole camera.”

  3. How many results did you retrieve?

The search returned eight different results.

  4. If there were more than about 100 results, how did you refine your search terms to narrow your results?

    Not Applicable.

  5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?

I chose to use the first result because it was the only result which specifically mentioned pinhole cameras.

  6. Which article did you choose? Give the bibliographic information for that article.
I chose to use an excerpt about pinhole cameras from an article titled “Optics.”

    • Authors: Encyclopedia Britannica T
    • Title: Optics
    • Edition: Britannica Online
    • Place of Publication: (Not Specified)
    • Publisher: (Not Specified)
    • Date of Publication: 2009

      http://search.eb.com/eb/article-37941

  7. How did you determine this article was meaningful?

The article describes how a difference in the size of the pinhole can affect the outcome of the picture. It also goes on to compare a pinhole to an actual camera lens.

Academic Search Premiere

  1. What terms did you enter to conduct your search?

First, I used the term “pinhole camera.” This returned 243 results. I then tried using the term “camera obscura.” This returned 332 results. Finally, I decided to use a combination of the two terms “pinhole camera” and “camera obscura” to conduct my search.

  2. How many results did you retrieve?

After searching a combination of the terms “pinhole camera” and “camera obscura” I was able to retrieve 8 relevant results.

  3. If there were more than about 100 results, how did you refine your search terms to narrow your results?

    (Refer to Question 01)

  4. What differences did you note in how you needed to manipulate your search terms in this different database?

    (Refer to Question 01)

  5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful?

Since there were a small number of results, I briefly looked through each result & chose the result which I felt was most relevant to my topic.

  6. Which article did you choose? Give the bibliographic information for that article (I must be able to access this article).

I chose to use an article titled “Successful Pinhole Photography”

  7. How did you determine if this article was meaningful?

    In the description, i
t said that this article would discuss the construction of a pinhole camera/camera obscura, the design of a pinhole lens, the construction of pinholes as well as experimental set up. Having a clear understanding of each of these components would be beneficial in helping one to understanf how a pinhole camera works.

Unit 03 Assignment 02

Research Log Entry

  1. Which of your questions did you try to answer?

    What is a pinhole camera?

  2. What EXACT terms did you enter into the keyword search screen?

First, I tried using the term “pinhole camera.” However, when that returned no results. My next instinct was to try using the term “camera.” Unfortunately, this did not yield any positive results. At this point, I thought that there were no reference materials relative to my subject. In fact, I even considered switching topics. However, after reading the suggestion that we should try making our searches even more narrow, I decided to try the term “photography” for my keyword search.

  3. What subject heading did you choose to be sure your item was on target and the best option for your search?

I chose the subject heading “Photography Encyclopedias.”

  4. What item did you eventually choose? Why?

Eventually, I chose an item titled “The Focal Encyclopedia of Photographic Technologies” because although it may be simple, a pinhole camera is still a technological device used in the photographic process. Consequently, it would make sense to use a reference regarding photographic technology when attempting to research a type of photographic technology.

Although dictionary references were available, I chose to use an encyclopedia as my reference source. Unlike dictionaries, which only define words, an encyclopedia can be describes as a comprehensive reference work which contains several articles pertaining to the numerous aspects of a given field (in this case, photographic technologies). I hope that through this encyclopedia, I will not only know the definition of the term “pinhole camera,” but that I will also have a better understanding of it & how it works.

  5. Give the bibliographic information for the item you chose.

    Author – Spencer, Douglass-Arthur
Title – The Focal Encyclopedia of Photographic Technologies
    Edition – (not specified)
Place of Publication – London, New York
    Publisher – Focal Press
    Date of Publication – 1973

  6. When you looked at the reference work, what quote did you choose? Why?

"Pinhole Camera - A camera without a lens which uses a very small sharp edged hole in its diaphragm to form an image where the scale is proportional to the distance between the diaphragm radius of the pinhole and the image plane" (Spencer 468).

I chose this quote because it gives a clear, detailed explanation of what a pinhole camera is & how it works.

  7. What makes this a reference book as opposed to a regular book you might find in the book stacks?

What makes this book a reference book is that it is a brief overview of specific information rather than a regular book which may contain an abundance of information regarding one (or more) topics.

When using a reference book, which is usually based upon a specific topic, it should be much easier to find the desired information. Whereas, if you were to use a regular book, it might be more difficult to find the same, specific information amidst the plethora of material presented.

Reference books are a quick and easy way to find and obtain information on a given topic/subject.

  8. In looking at the material in the book and the publication date in the bibliographic information, what year do you think the information really comes from?

After looking at the material in the book, I believe that the information presented in this reference was developed during, or in relation to, the time at which is was published (1973). For comparison, I also looked at another photographic reference book which was published in 1993. The difference was apparent - the quality of the images and/or diagrams presented in the older reference book were one-dimensional drawings which lacked the high resolution of the images and/or diagrams presented in the more recent reference. Additionally, the quality of the books themselves (the binding & the paper, etc) varied in terms of quality as well.

Unit 03 Assignment 01

Research Log Entry

I chose to change my topic for this assignment. Below, is my updated "sizing" activity.

  1. Topic string – Art

Art is often divided into more specific categories according to technique, form, genre and style. Photography is a form of visual art.

    • Broadest Topic – Photography

Although it is important for photographers to have a clear understanding of both the technical and compositional elements of photography, having adequate equipment and supplies can also make a significant difference in the outcome of a photograph.

    • Next Broad Topic – Photographic Equipment

There are several different types of photographic equipment including film, lenses, filters, etc.
However, the camera is definitely the most basic piece of equipment (not to mention the most important).

    • Narrower Topic – The Camera

Over the years, the basic point and shoot camera has evolved as a result of several technological advancements.
Single-lens reflex cameras have now been replaced with touch-screen digital cameras. But where did it all begin? The basic foundation for the construction of today’s cameras was built upon the idea of the Camera Obscura, or the Pinhole Camera – a lensless camera with a small hole (or “pinhole”) through which light passes and enters to form an image on a light-sensitive medium such as film.

    • Even Narrower Topic – Camera Obscura/Pinhole Camera

(Side note: Cameras and equipment can be quite expensive. However, Pinhole Cameras can easily be made by using common household materials. Making and using a pinhole camera will acquaint you with the basic elements of photography while providing an inexpensive and interesting way to take pictures.)

  2. Think of two questions that you could ask about your topic
    a.What is a pinhole camera?
    b.
How does a pinhole camera work to produce a photographic image?

Catalog Search Results

Bibliographic Information
  • Author – (German) Günter Derleth with additional texts by Paul Liebhardt and Pia M. Grüber. (Translation from German) – Suzy & John Godsey
  • Title Venice: Camera Obscura
  • Edition - Edition Stemmle
  • Place of Publication – (German) – Zurich and (Translation from German) – New York
  • Publisher – (not specified)
  • Date of publication – 2000

Additional Information

  • Location - Oversized Stacks (ff)
  • Call Number - TR650 .D47 2000
  • Status - ON THE SHELF

Subject Headings
  • Venice (Italy) - (Pictorial Works)
  • Photography, Pinhole (Catalogs)
  • Photography, Artistic (Catalogs)
  • Derleth, Günter, 1941 (Catalogs)

I chose to use the Subject Heading “Photography, Pinhole” because it was most relevant to my topic. This gave me Select the subject heading that is most relevant to your topic. After following this link to the Subject Heading Index, I found that there was only one result for that particular subject heading. Therefore, I had an equal number of results through the use of subject headings as I did through the use of a keyword search. Because there was only one result for each search, I was presented with the same information. Luckily, from what I could tell, the information was relevant to my topic. However, in other instances, I would assume that subject headings would provide results that are most relevant because the search is more refined to a specific topic.

Using subject headings is very similar to the idea of "sizing" your topic. In fact, the concept may be much easier to grasp if one considers it as simply "sizing” the results search. When you do a keyword search, you are presented with results which contain any, one, none, or all of your keywords (the keyword(s) is similar to your “broad/large topic”). From here, you can select a result which is more relevant to your topic (this selection is similar to your “next broad topic”). After doing so, you are then able to further refine your search by using subject headings. You are now able to choose a subject heading which is most relevant to your topic (this selection is similar to your “narrower topic”). Once you have selected a subject heading, you are taken to the Subject Heading Index. Here, you are presented with results that are not only related to your keyword, but mores specifically, refined by your subject heading. Hence, the result you choose is more likely to be extremely relevant to your topic (these results can be considered your “narrowest topic”).

Although both keywords and subject headings are programmed searches through coding, they have different characteristics. The differences between key words and subject headings are as follows:

  • Keywords use unstructured language | Subject Headings use structured language
  • There is no human intervention in the use of keywords | Subject Headings are assigned by humans

Ultimately, although keyword searches may return several results, subject headings are more refined and will return results that are even more relevant to a specific topic.

Unit 02 Assignment 01

Research Log Entry

  • Topic string – Atmospheric Gases

Nitrogen gas makes up about 78% of the volume of the Earth’s atmosphere – making it the most abundant atmospheric gas.

  • Broadest Topic – Nitrogen

However, most plants & animals can not use nitrogen directly from the air. This nitrogen has to be converted into “usable” nitrogen compounds in order for it to be used by plants and animals.

  • Next Broad Topic – Usable Nitrogen Compounds

The process nitrogen must undergo in order to become usable by plants and/or an animal is called the nitrogen fixation process.

  • Narrower Topic – 3-Step Nitrogen Fixation Process

During this 3-step process, nitrogen is combined with hydrogen to create ammonia (NH3) or ammonium (NH). Then, a nitrite-forming bacterium combines this ammonia (or ammonium) with Oxygen to create Nitrite (NO). Next, a nitrate-forming bacterium adds Oxygen to the nitrite, forming Nitrate (NO3), which is absorbable by plants. These plants absorb the Nitrates, and break them down into Ammonium.

  • Even Narrower Topic – The breakdown of Nitrates into Ammonium for use in building Amino Acids.

Think of two questions that you could ask about your topic
  1. How do plants break down Nitrates in order to form Ammonium?
  2. What are Amino Acids composed of?

Unit 01 Assignment 02

Research Log Entry

  1. What question did you try to answer?

What size is the ecological footprint in Europe?

  2. What terms did you select to begin?

To begin, I selected three terms:
    1. Ecological
    2.
    Footprint
    3.
    Europe

  3. What web search engine or engines did you use?

I used Google, Yahoo! Search, and Ask.

  4. Search Techniques

a.) What search terms did you use?

I used different variations and combinations of the terms “ecological,” “footprint,” and“Europe” to conduct my search.

b.) What search techniques did you use?

I used two techniques, in which I used different BOOLEAN operators to refine my search. For this search, I used two sets of search terms:

    1. Ecological Footprint/Europe
    2. “Ecological Footprint” +
    Europe

  5. Evaluation

a.) How did you evaluate your results?

This time, I chose to use C.A.R.D.I.O. to evaluate my results. Using this method, I was able to evaluate the results in terms of
Currency, Authority, Relevance, Depth, Information Type & Objectivity

    b.)
What conclusions did you draw about the different search engines?

    • What the same?

Each search engine has a similar design and gives users the option to search the web for information images, maps, and news.

    • What was different?

Although the search engines were similar in design and features, each search engine had a variety of different search features. Below are the links to the extra services/features offered by each search engine:

      http://www.google.com/intl/en/options
      http://tools.search.yahoo.com/about/forsearchers.html
      http://sp.ask.com/docs/about/site_features_a11.shtml

    • Differences in number of results

In both variations of the search, Yahoo! Search returned the most results, followed by Google, and then Ask. In the first search, Yahoo! Search and Google returned a comparable number of results (Yahoo! Search - 1,930,000 and Google1, 490,000) while Ask returned a much lower amount (62,000). However, in the second search, Yahoo! Search returned a high number of results (1,050,000). In comparison, Google and Ask returned a relatively low number of results (Google - 94,300 and Ask - 136,700)

c.) Why do you think the search engines behaved as they did?

As I have just learned, Yahoo! Search now claims to be the largest search engine available on the web. Yahoo! Search searches about 22 billions sites for results pertaining to each search – this is most likely the reason behind the high number of returned results. Both Google and Ask refine their results in terms of popularity (which results are viewed most). However, Ask, like Yahoo! Search, also refines its results according to relevance. This implies that these search engines returns results which have information pertaining to the search topic. Perhaps this is why Ask seems to return a lower number of results than both Google and Yahoo! Search – it is more refined (limiting its returned results to those that are both relevant AND popular).

  6. What other questions came into your mind as you carried out this exercise?

While conducting these searches, I began to wonder how the size of a nation’s ecological footprint is determined – what statistics and/or factors are taken into account?

Research Log Entry

  1. What is Delicious?

Delicious is a web tool that gives users the ability to bookmark, tag, save, manage, and share web pages. Here, you can save web pages which you have found interesting and/or wish to share with others. You may also view other web pages which have been tagged.

  2. What is the advantage of this Web 2.0 tool?

Some advantages of using Delicious may include

    • Saving Web Pages – this allows you to revisit these web pages in the future without having to conduct another search

    • Tagged Web Pages – a convenient search tool which will return results of web pages containing tags similar or related to your search

    • Ability to Manage Saved Web Pages – allows you to sort and organize pages according to your own preferences

  3. Do you think you might use it? If so, why? If not, why not?

I may very well use Delicious. It seems to be a convenient and useful web tool which will make searching the web more efficient. I like the idea of being able to save, tag and manage web pages which I have taken an interest in – this is much easier than having to search for the page every time you wish to revisit it. The ability to tag and manage saved web pages is very appealing – allowing users to categorize their saved pages proficiently.
